An unknown author stated, "The soul would have no rainbow hath the eyes no
tears."  For a family to be told someone they love, admire, and adore is diagnosed
with schizophrenia, their eyes definitely find the tears, but the rainbow seems
completely out of reach.  This is especially difficult when the person diagnosed is
their child, parent, or spouse.  Darkness and confusion is experienced in the mind
of the schizophrenic; but fear, loss of control, helplessness, denial, and grief is
what the family feels.  Thoughts of  “if only I could haves” begin to enter the
minds of those that long to have their family member stable and back in a world
they could understand.  Hearing the diagnosis and believing it is two different
realms of reality, the family must learn to blend together to begin to comprehend
and accept the prognosis.

We are each of us angels but with only one wing, and it is when we embrace each
other that we can fly.  There is a rainbow found when the family realizes that
unconditional love, hope, and a new perspective on viewing life can be found
through the schizophrenic’s world.
